Graduated in Medical Biological Sciences from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, with a master’s and doctorate in Sciences (Microbiology) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, USA.
Currently, he is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His main research lines focus on the interaction of trypanosomatids with vertebrate and invertebrate hosts, the analysis of aspects of the innate immune response in vertebrate hosts, and the role of vector saliva components in these mechanisms.
His research also includes:
(1) The leishmanicidal activity of products derived from Brazilian plants and algae;
(2) Mechanisms involved in Leishmania-HIV-1 co-infection responsible for the exacerbated growth of these two pathogens;
(3) The interaction of trypanosomatids with insect vectors.
Currently, his studies focus on the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and other innate immune cells in leishmaniasis and other diseases. He is a “Cientista do Nosso Estado” fellow from FAPERJ and a level 1A researcher at CNPq.
