Herbert Leonel de Matos Guedes is an Associate Professor at the Paulo de Góes Institute of Microbiology – Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IMPG/UFRJ) and a Public Health Researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute – Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (IOC/FIOCRUZ). He is a CNPq Level 1D Productivity Fellow and a Cientista do Nosso Estado Fellow from FAPERJ.

He holds a degree in Pharmacy from UFRJ (2000-2003), a master’s degree (2003-2005), and a Ph.D. (2005-2009) from the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, with part of his doctoral studies conducted at the University of Glasgow (Scotland/UK) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (NY/USA). He also completed postdoctoral training at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Herbert is the leader of the Immunology and Vaccinology research group. He serves as the Head of the Immunobiotechnology Laboratory at IMPG/UFRJ and the Head of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/FIOCRUZ).

His research areas include:

1. Development of vaccines against leishmaniasis;
2. Investigating the role of Leishmania serine proteases in survival, nutrition, and infection;
3. Developing new therapies for leishmaniasis using immunotherapy and stem cells;
4. Developing vaccines against emerging viruses.

In undergraduate education, he coordinates the Immunobiologics course and participates in courses on Microbiology and Immunology.

At the graduate level, he is affiliated with:
I) The Graduate Program in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) as a permanent faculty member, teaching Immunobiology of Leishmaniasis and collaborating in the Introduction to Immunology and the Immune System course.
II) The Graduate Program in Immunology and Inflammation as a permanent faculty member, coordinating the courses Vaccinology: Old and New Concepts, Dendritic Cells, and Macrophages in Health and Disease.
III) The Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology at IOC/FIOCRUZ, where he collaborates in the Immunology course. (Text provided by the author.)
