He holds a degree in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) (1993) and completed his Master’s (1997) and PhD (2001) in Biological Chemistry at the Department of Medical Biochemistry at UFRJ. During his PhD, he completed short-term internships at the Unite des Venins (Institut Pasteur, Paris, France), under the supervision of Dr. Cassian Bon, and at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri” (Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, Sta Maria Imbaro, Italy), under the supervision of Dr. Licia Iacoviello. He is currently a Full Professor at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry Leopoldo de Meis (IBqM) at UFRJ, where he leads the Thrombosis and Cancer Laboratory. This research group focuses on studying various pathological processes involving vascular components, including blood coagulation, platelets, and cells of the innate immune system. Among these diseases, thrombosis, malignant neoplasms, and infectious processes stand out. In particular, the group has studied the role of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in different aspects of tumor progression. Additionally, the group is interested in studying subcellular structures known as extracellular vesicles, with an emphasis on their pro-tumoral and pro-thrombotic roles. He served as the coordinator of the Biological Chemistry Graduate Program at UFRJ from 2011 to 2018. He is currently the coordinator of the Interinstitutional Program of Teaching, Research, and Extension in Cancer Biology (Oncobiology Program) at UFRJ.
